Tinnitus Cure – British Tinnitus Association Facts & Figures

Having been on the website for the British Tinnitus Association I came across some facts and figures. they must mean that there are a lot of people out there looking for a tinnitus cure.

Tinnitus is thought to be on the rise as well, the fact that we are now approaching the end of 2011 means that there are many more sufferers in the UK and around the World.

Mild tinnitus is common ‑ about 10 per cent of the UK adult population have it all the time and, in up to one per cent of adults, this may affect their quality of life.

In 2009/10 the BTA:

  • supported over 3,300 callers through our confidential freephone helpline
  • distributed over 55,000 tinnitus information leaflets, in several languages
  • distributed 6,500 copies of Quiet, the BTA’s journal, every quarter
  • trained 152 medical professionals to improve their skills and understand how to support people with tinnitus
  • organised Tinnitus Awareness Week in February, raising awareness of tinnitus amongst the general public
  • funded a dedicated Senior Research Associate at University College London to investigate causes and cures for tinnitus
  • organised an Annual conference – the national tinnitus event for professionals, increasing understanding and awareness of tinnitus
  • distributed education packs to schools, at Key Stages 2 and 3

The BTA is doing valuabke work in supporting those with Tinnitus. However, when it comes to a cure there are a number of other options out there. I champion one in particular which, if you read this blog you will find out why, if you are a sufferer you need it too.

Tinnitus Cure – Will.I.Am has Tinnitus

I came across this interesting article about Will.I.Am, a pop musician who has Tinnitus. I thought that this was excellent as it illustrates that there are people that we may already know desperately seeking a Tinnitus Cure.

13th December 2010 – The Black Eyed Peas are number one in the singles chart fresh from Will.I.Am’s appearance on the X Factor at the weekend – but the star’s revealed how music has damaged his hearing, causing tinnitus.

Will, who’s 35, has told The Sun newspaper: “I don’t know what silence sounds like any more. Music is the only thing which eases my pain.”

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a noise in the absence of any external sound. The noise can be ringing, whistling, buzzing or more complex sounds.

One in seven people in the UK have experienced tinnitus. Long-term tinnitus affects about one in 100 people.

Troublesome tinnitus can be very distressing for people who suffer from it, affecting sleep, concentration and mood.

This is how Will.I.Am describes the condition: “I can’t be quiet as that’s when I notice the ringing in my ears. There’s always a beep there every day, all day.  Like now. I don’t know exactly how long I’ve had this but it’s gradually got worse.”

However, in many cases, changes to a person’s environment can address some of these issues and improve quality of life.

Will.I.Am ‘Highlights an important issue’

In a statement, David Stockdale, CEO of the British Tinnitus Association says: “The recent revelation that Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas experiences tinnitus highlights a hugely important issue – that tinnitus is prolific among musicians and that not enough is being done to prevent tinnitus and permanent hearing damage among the music community as well as the wider public.”

The charity operates a confidential helpline and produces special leaflets giving advice for musicians about the risks from noise or loud levels of sound. It also discusses the use of hearing protectors.

Give up music?

Dr Peter Wheeler, Trustee of the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) is the author of the Advice for Musicians leaflet. He says: “Because of loud sound levels and frequent exposure to noise, musicians can develop hearing problems such as tinnitus and hearing loss. The advice which is given is sometimes along the following lines: ‘Give up your career or interest and find something quieter to do’ or ‘Just keep playing and don’t let the tinnitus affect your life’, neither of which are particularly helpful.

“However, it is usually possible to strike a balance between these two views. You can continue with your music by using the right kind of hearing protection, which reduces the sound levels to which you are exposed without unduly affecting your listening sound quality. Many musicians have taken this option, and it seems to be a sensible, practical way of dealing with the problem.  Musicians should protect their hearing whilst playing. There are various reasons for this – for example, the risk of hearing damage, temporary post-exposure tinnitus and loudness discomfort. ”

I think that when you know there are people suffering from Tinnitus in this way then it makes the issue seem much more real and something that you should try to seek out a cure for. The disruption that it can cause to your life is worth the extra effort of trying to find something that will cure your tinnitus.

Tinnitus Cure – Alternative Methods

I did some research on alternative methods of tinnitus relief and found that there are a number of options out there. A couple of these I have tried in the past and they have been relatively effective. However, the one thing that I would say about all of these things up front, however, is that they will only be effective for as long as you use them. Sounds obvious in a way (but don’t worry if you didn’t realise, like me).

Herbal treatments – there are many herbal treatments out there for all different kinds of things, they have also been around for thousands of years. In my opinion this means that they cannot be ignored. However, in terms of how well they work, then the effectiveness tends to differ a lot between users.

There is a herb that is supposed to aid tinnitus relief and it is called ginkgo biloba. The effect that it has on the body is to enhance blood flow.

Essential oils – This is an option that I have tried in the past. The oil that I used was Lavender but other ones that are supposed to be effective are Cypress and Juniper. The ways that you can get these oils into your system, as it were, could be inhalation, vaporisation, massage or bathing. I found that vaporisation worked well for me.

Diet Optimisation – Eating healthily is probably the single most important thing that you can do. It will have a positive impact on your body in so many ways. Vitamin B is important for energy levels in your body but it can also help relieve the ringing in your ears. Remember, the best way to get vitamins is through natural products, supplements are never as good, although better than nothing.

In conclusion – I hope that the above has been informative for you but I must reiterate that the above will only help your tinnitus for as long as you are using them. If you want to get rid of your tinnitus at the source then a holistic approach is going to be the most effective way. More on that soon…

Tinnitus Cure – Causes of Tinnitus

Having discovered that there is not really any medicinal option for tinnitus relief I soon realised that I would have to take a different route of investigation. I thought that the logical place to start would be to investigate the causes of tinnitus.

Exposure to loud noises – I think that this may be the reason why I started to get tinnitus. Being in environments that are very loud, such as clubs, music festivals or construction sites can damage your ears causing the condition. The loud noise damage your cochlea. If it is not possible to stay away from very loud environments then invest in a pair of earplugs.

Head injury – damage to the head can cause tinnitus. The shock of an impact to the skull can be enough. Athletes that hear ringing in their ears may have got the condition in this way.

Ear infections or other ear problems – An ear infection or even a bad infection in your sinuses can be a cause. When there is an infection the mucus inside your head thickens. This causes extra pressure which can then lead to tinnitus.

Some additional causes that I also found were also stress and depression. As you can see there are a wide range of factors that can lead to ringing in your ears. My next step was to find out if all of these causes of tinnitus could be treated in the same way…

Tinnitus Cure – The Start of My Search

Before I got tinnitus I was leading a perfectly normal life. I can’t quite remember when i started hearing a ringing in my ears but once I noticed it for the first time it was impossible to hear it. Initially I thought that there must have been a source for these noises but it was not long before i realised that this ringing in my ears was coming from within my ear.

It was difficult to not be consumed by this noise. The most difficult time, I found, was going to sleep. The rest of the room would be quiet but the inescapable noise would prevent me from sleeping for hours.

After seeing the Doctor I left feeling more informed, I now knew that I had a common condition known as tinnitus. It is something that affects a number of people. It can be a clicking, buzzing or ringing sound and it doesn’t have to be something that you hear 24/7. That was a slight encouragement but to hear that there is not really any medical cure for the condition was difficult to take. The thought that I would have to endure this tinnitus for the rest of my life was not something that I was prepared to surrender myself to. From that day I started to investigate other potential ways to relieve my tinnitus.
